Having been in the travel business for over 30 years, I still love my job selling travel.  Of course, along with selling travel is the opportunity to travel, which is why most of us got into this business.   I've traveled extensively across the wo...

When it comes to transformative travel experiences, few can compare to the grandeur of an East African safari. My recent journey through Kenya and Tanzania with Micato Safaris elevated the concept of adventure travel to extraordinary heights, culminating in breathtaking wildlife encounters and luxurious accommodations that perfectly complemented the untamed beauty of the region.

Starting in Nairobi

Our adventure began in Nairobi, where we visited the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. This incredible organization rescues orphaned baby elephants, primarily victims of poaching, and nurtures them until they are ready to return to the wild. For years, I have sponsored these gentle giants, and meeting my adopted baby, Olomunyak, was an unforgettable experience. At just 18 months old, he was thriving under the care of the orphanage. When you travel with a premium safari company like Micato, you gain access to exclusive experiences, such as private interactions with these adorable, chubby babies. We also visited the Karen Blixen Museum and fed giraffes at the Giraffe Center, a charming prelude to the wild adventures ahead.

Loisaba Conservancy: Where the Journey Truly Begins

Our first safari stop was Loisaba Conservancy in northern Kenya. From the moment we arrived, the magic began—a majestic elephant greeted us near the airstrip, setting the tone for the rest of our stay. After settling into our luxurious tented camp, we embarked on an evening game drive, where we spotted our first lion. The next day, we learned about Loisaba’s tracker dog program, which combats poaching. A bush breakfast amidst stunning landscapes was the perfect way to end our visit.

Majestic Maasai Mara

Next, we flew to the iconic Maasai Mara. This vast game reserve, named in honor of the Maasai people, is contiguous with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Here, we encountered incredible wildlife, from graceful giraffes to powerful predators. Our last night in the Mara featured a private bush dinner under the stars, a fitting farewell to this enchanting region.

The Serengeti: Wildlife Abundance

Crossing the Kenya-Tanzania border, we made our way to the legendary Serengeti. Staying at the Four Seasons Serengeti redefined luxury in the wilderness. Within 24 hours, we saw an astonishing array of wildlife: 47 lions, countless hippos, two lion kills, and even a cheetah! Game viewing in the Serengeti is truly the ultimate safari experience.

The Ngorongoro Crater: A Natural Marvel

Our final destination was the Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania. This massive caldera, once a towering volcano, is one of the most biodiverse and beautiful wildlife havens on Earth. Standing on the crater’s rim, overlooking its lush expanse, was awe-inspiring. Driving into the crater brought us up close to a dazzling array of animals, from zebras to rhinos, living in this ancient, untouched ecosystem.

Moments That Stay With You

Throughout the trip, I found myself marveling at the balance of untouched nature and the human efforts to protect it. From the innovative conservation programs to the impeccable hospitality of the lodges, every moment felt like a privilege. The expert guidance of Micato Safaris ensured that every detail was seamless, allowing me to focus entirely on soaking in the experience.

If you’re dreaming of a safari, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are must-visit destinations. Combined with the unique charm of Kenya’s reserves and the expertise of a premier safari company, this journey will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
